The Past Comes to Life

Serving as an invaluable asset to the global climbing community, the Yosemite Climbing Museum chronicles the evolution of modern day rock climbing from 1869 to the present - highlighting iconic first ascents and the daring adventurers who made them possible; Yosemite’s key role in the advent of Big Wall climbing techniques worldwide; and the development of climbing equipment prompted by the rise of the clean climbing movement n the early 1970s.  The space provides a unique forum for displaying and curating historical climbing artifacts, as well as photography, publications, and memorabilia: collectively, the climbing community's art.

In the early 1990s, Yosemite locals, Ken Yager and Mike Corbett realized there was a need for to preserve Yosemite’s Rich Climbing history. Together they formed the Yosemite Climbing Archives and dedicated themselves to their shared the vision of a public museum.

Over the next three decades, as supportive partnerships were developed, the ever-expanding archival holdings were displayed in temporary exhibits in Yosemite National Park and across California.

In 2003, Ken Yager formed the Yosemite Climbing Association, as a non-profit dedicated to this mission and vision. The Mariposa space demonstrates his commitment to filling that need.
