Yvon Chouinard demonstrating the lost art of forging pitons. Here he has the stock heating up in the forge.
Shaping the red hot stock for a Lost Arrow piton.
Getting ready to punch out the eye in the piton. The anvil Yvon is using weighs over 120 pounds. Back when he started making pitons he would roll the anvil down the hillside to the beach in order to make pitons at beach and surfing parties. Afterwards he would carry it back up the hillside.
Grinding off the rough edges.
Reheating the Lost Arrow for the final step, tempering.
